A Multiple Comparison Procedure for Populations with Unequal Variances
نویسنده
چکیده
This article investigates an exact method that extends Dunnett’s method on the multiple comparisons with a control (MCC) to the case of unequal error variances when the ratios of population variances of k new treatments to that of the control group are known from previous experience. The advantages of the proposed method is illustrated through an example. The simulation results show that the typical methods assuming the equal variance will have inflated error rate and may lead to erroneous inference. In addition, two approximate approaches are proposed to provide the simultaneous confidence intervals for the differences between each new treatment and the control mean with unknown ratios and unequal variances. The Monte Carlo study shows that the proposed approach always controls the family-wise error rate at a specified nominal level α, while some established method has inflated error rate in some instances.

A Parametric Bootstrap Approach for One-Way ANOVA Under Unequal Variances with Unbalanced Data
This research is to provide a solution of one-way ANOVA without using transformation when variances are heteroscedastic and group sizes are unequal. Parametric boothstrap test (Krishnamoorthy, Lu, & Mathew, 2007) has been shown to be competitive with many other methods when testing the equality of group means. We extend the parametric bootstrap algorithm to a multiple comparison procedure. Simu...
متن کاملOn the Behrens-fisher Distribution and Its Generalization to the Pairwise Comparisons∗
Weerahandi (1995b) suggested a generalization of the Fisher’s solution of the Behrens-Fisher problem to the problem of multiple comparisons with unequal variances by the method of generalized p-values. In this paper, we present a brief outline of the Fisher’s solution and its generalization as well as the methods to calculate the p-values required for deriving the conservative joint confidence ...
متن کاملMultiple Comparison of Age Groups in Bone Mineral Density under Heteroscedasticity
Osteoporosis is a silent disease because individuals may not know that they have osteoporosis until their bones become so fragile. Bone mineral density (BMD) test helps to detect osteoporosis and determine the risk fractures. This study covers bone measurement data from total body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans for 28,454 persons who participated in the 1996-2006 National Health and Nut...
متن کاملA robust new metric of phenotypic distance to estimate and compare multiple trait differences among populations
Whereas a rich literature exists for estimating population genetic divergence, metrics of phenotypic trait divergence are lacking, particularly for comparing multiple traits among three or more populations. Here, we review and analyze via simulation Hedges’ g, a widely used parametric estimate of effect size. Our analyses indicate that g is sensitive to a combination of unequal trait variances ...
متن کاملHow informative is Wright's estimator of the number of genes affecting a quantitative character?
S. Wright suggested an estimator, m, of the number of loci, m, contributing to the difference in a quantitative character between two differentiated populations, which is calculated from the phenotypic means and variances in the two parental populations and their F1 and F2 hybrids. The same method can also be used to estimate m contributing to the genetic variance within a single population, by...
